This summer sunset/tropical sherbet flavored beauty is the fifth quilt project my Mom and I made alongside each other. The excellent pattern, from Stitched in Color, gives the maker space to customize the layout and quilt elements, so every quilt is unique. I also learned a lot of great paper piecing tips from Rachel's thoughtful, detailed guidance.

I love the blend of figurative blocks (the bird, the bike, the apartments) and traditional blocks (the pineapple, the tulip crown, etc.) in this quilt design. One of my personal goals was to incorporate more solids - something this print-loving quiltmaker struggles with. Every block features at least one solid-colored fabric.

The most significant customization I made to this project was to include the embroidered lyrics from Pat Benatar's "We Belong." This piece came from a handmade wall hanging wedding gift that I disassembled in order to repurpose the embroidered lyrics as a quilt element here. "We belong to the light, we belong to the thunder!" Indeed.
